About GovCMS sandpits

About the sandpits

Sandpits deliver mini projects as proof of concepts (small packages). Agencies are taken through the RaC process:

  • Rules mapping
  • OpenFisca coding
  • Drupal webform build and results

The sandpits let you test your RaC use-case and build your RaC capability.

The GovCMS RaC sandpits are hosted on a fully open source tech stack. They use the Drupal OpenFisca module to create RaC webforms.

Roadmap for GovCMS and RaC

Two key RaC roadmap items:

  • Operationalise - secure, resilient, scalable RaC engine on the GovCMS platform

  • Build RaC as reusable, shared utility on GovCMS

The history of GovCMS and RaC

In a 2022 presentation to the GovCMS community,  Sharyn Clarkson outlined an ambitious, long-held vision she had for citizen-centric user journeys. She gave an example of a pregnant uni student and Sharyn's vision of government providing a simple pathway so this person could easily find entitlements relevant to her needs, transcending government agency boundaries.

Sharyn went on to say the GovCMS program, with its 100-strong agency community, could play a key role in delivering on this vision.

In late 2022, GovCMS approached the market to learn how it could offer government agencies a suite of tools to deliver even better, more personalised digital experiences (DXP) for citizens. While Rules as Code is not traditionally associated with DXP, it's a powerful concept that can be used to deliver highly personalised content. It can greatly improve an individual's experience when interacting with government, and lower the barrier for accessing government services and entitlements. The diagram below shows how it can work.

A diagram showing how questions submitted by users are then sent to OpenFisca and results are sent back to the users.
